Victoria Burge: New Works on Paper

Accola Griefen Gallery, 547 W27th St., NYC #634

Victoria Burge’s prints and drawings offer “mystical geographies … a world of tonal harmonies, yellowed papers, and of blacks and whites that modulate to pewters and charcoal grays.” (Mona Molarsky, ArtNews). Building from these earlier topographies Burge continues to be inspired by and to use antique maps, charts and diagrams as the surface she draws on. In this new series the drawings have evolved into a world of mysterious geometric symbols whose assemblies and symmetries resemble an alchemist’s recipe or a page from an ancient astronomer’s journal. Burge creates new visual systems that convey her explorations into memory, absence and the multiple dimensions and implications of space, both human and scientific.
